IDEA Hosts Student on Job Shadow Day

The Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) made a commitment to have its member companies host at least 100 Northern Virginia high school juniors or seniors on Job Shadow Day. IDEA, a member of the NVTC, was a participant in this event on February 2, 2007, hosting Johnny Hernandez, a junior from Marshall High School in Falls Church, VA.

Hernandez was invited to IDEA to see firsthand how the skills learned in school relate to the workplace. His visit included a tour of the IDEA office, a meet and greet with staff members, a company luncheon in which he learned about the software development process and a one-on-one session with each product manager.

“Software development seems pretty interesting to me. If there was an opportunity to be an intern this summer, I would be interested in learning more about being a Network Admin; however business would also be another choice for me because I’d like to broaden my horizon,” said Hernandez.

National Job Shadow Day is an academically motivating activity designed to give kids the unique opportunity of an up-close look at the world of work and provide the answer to the commonly asked question, “Why do I have to learn this?”

The nationwide kickoff was on Friday, February 2, 2007. The program, led by the National Job Shadow Coalition, is nationally sponsored by ING and Nelnet. The NJSC will promote the continuation of this program throughout the school year. Students across America “shadowed” workplace mentors as they went through a normal day on the job.

“I enjoyed the job shadow experience and would definitely do it again, if given the chance,” said Hernandez.
